Yvonne Todd

Fine Arts, Sydney is presenting an exhibition of work by Yvonne Todd.

This exhibition comprises a selection of Yvonne Todd's work in the genre of still life. The exhibition presents a genre-specific selection, drawn from different bodies of Todd's work over the past 12 years.

Yvonne Todd makes portraits, landscapes, and still lifes using studio photogrpahic techniques ad large format film cameras. Todd's subject matter is often to do with the representation of archetypes, sentimentality, artifice, and imperfection. Her picture-making uses the traditions and conventions of studio portraiture and product photography with carefully staged compositions of people, places, and objects.

Yvonne Todd studied commercial photography in the mid-1990s before completing BFA in sculpture at the University of Auckland Elam School of Fine Arts in 2001. She was awarded the inaugural Walters Prize in 2002. Todd held her first solo exhibition at Teststrip, Auckland, in 1997, and her work has since been the subject of solo exhibitions at City Gallery Wellington, Wellington (2014-2015); Christchurch Art Gallery, Christchurch (2013); Centre for Contemporary Photography, Melbourne (2012); Dunedin Public Art Gallery, Dunedin (2012); and Institute of Modern Art, Brisbane (2007). Todd’s work has been included in the 17th Biennale of Sydney (2010), Busan Biennale (2006), and in thematic exhibitions at institutions throughout Australasia including Christchurch Art Gallery, Christchurch (2017, 2016, 2013), Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney (2015), Museum of New Zealand, Wellington (2013, 2005, 2004, 2003, 2002), National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne (2010), Queensland Art Gallery / Gallery of Modern Art, Brisbane (2010), Auckland Art Gallery, Auckland (2017, 2014, 2007, 2005, 2002); Govett-Brewster Art Gallery, New Plymouth (2009, 2006, 2004, 2000, 1999, 1998); and Heide Museum of Art, Melbourne (2002). Yvonne Todd was born in 1973 in Auckland, New Zealand, where she lives and works. This is the artist’s first solo exhibition in Sydney.
