Prudence Flint

The Wish

May — June, 2020

Fine Arts, Sydney is presenting an exhibition of new work by Prudence Flint.

For the past twenty years, Prudence Flint’s paintings have featured mainly female figures in interior spaces and occasionally outdoors. Her figures are wilfully distorted, as are the perspectives of her soft-toned, flat, geometricised pictorial spaces. Although reticent about specific narratives, her paintings are charged with layers of feeling and psychology, confinement and freedom.

Prudence Flint’s process is painterly, continuing the techniques and traditions of figurative painting. She has a regular practice of drawing and painting from life, and has a close circle that model for her paintings at her studio. Her paintings take many months to make, and can gestate for years. Ideas start as drawings in pencil and charcoal, painted in rough and loose studies, and then in layers becoming more refined, simplified, clarified, and detailed as finished paintings.

Prudence Flint was born in 1962 in Melbourne, Australia, where she continues to live and work. She completed MA Fine Art at Monash University, Melbourne, in 2008, and BA Fine Arts at Victorian College of the Arts, Melbourne, in 1989.

This is Prudence Flint’s first exhibition with Fine Arts, Sydney.
