Peter Stichbury

Soft Machines

7 June — 12 July, 2025

Fine Arts, Sydney is presenting an exhibition of new paintings by Peter Stichbury.

Peter Stichbury’s paintings are constituted from the study of real, depicted, and imagined figures. The subjects of Stichbury’s paintings are typically composites of images and identities drawn together from sources found in photographic media, as well as narrative-based material and images in the public domain. Stichbury uses the pictorial conventions of traditional portraiture and exacting oil painting technique. With sequent bodies of work over recent years, Stichbury has painted a cast of subjects whose portrait-like representations speak softly to the artist’s thematic interest in the observance of human and artificial consciousness.

In this exhibition Stichbury’s paintings could be thought of not so much as portraits, but interfaces. In each, Stichbury has reimagined early artificial intelligences as synthetic subjects. Painting in oil on linen is a medium to give a face to early machine minds, united not by humanity, but its simulation.

This is the artist’s third solo exhibition with the gallery.
